Clockwise : fenugreek powder, kasoori methi, seeds
Mistress of spices, Mythilli of vindhu has invited bloggers and non -bloggers for this great informative event, and while googling for information, i cleaned up so much about Fenugreek, it was like going back to college days where in we used to spend hours together in the college library reffering something which leads to something else.. ..out of subject, read the same, day and night just out of interest…no regrets if you dont score well in subjects… still you feel you are more informative than others. :-)
Now, i wish if somebody ask me 'Do you know anything about Fenugreek?' 'Yes i know lot of things about fenugreek…
The Botonical name for fenugreek is Trigonella foenum-graecum, is actually one of the oldest cultivated plants. References to fenugreek were found in records from Egyptian tombs. The plant is indigenous to western Asia and southeastern Europe but it is cultivated throughout the Mediterranean, India and Northern Africa.
India and some parts of middle east uses fenugreek leaves(methi, menthya, uluva chappu) to make delicious dishes. The leaves are dried(Kasoori methi) and pinch of it is a real taste enchancer gives a total new flavor to the dish. The bittery flavoured seeds are aromatic when roasted. An extract of the seeds is used commercially in artificial flavorings such as vanilla, caramel, butterscotch and especially maple.
I still remember few years back, one of my friend had asked me to take gulp of a tsp of fenugreek seeds with water for my periodical stomach aches. Trust me! It helps. I never had a clue that fenugreek has a steroidal component which kills the pain to cetain extent.
The chemical composition of these seeds resembles that of cod-liver oil, which has similar substances that stimulate the appetite by their action on the nervous system, or produce a diuretic or ureo-poietic effect. Can avoid lot of UTI if we add it in our regular diet.
It is used in diabetes in conjunction with insulin. I have heard People who were not able to get control on excess of sugar in the blood, take gruel made of fenugreek seeds. Its hard to drink, but a kind of boon for high diabetic lot.
Fenugreek relieves congestion, reduces inflammation and fights infection and contains natural expectorant properties.
Fenugreek seed is widely used as a galactagogue (milk producing agent) by nursing mothers to increase inadequate breast milk supply. This point if noted can be helpful for 'to be mom'bloggers:)
I just found ample medicinal properties of fenugreek seeds. I did not want to make a Colbert report as Mythili said:). Just google as 'Fenugreek', load yourself with extra infomations.
In India it is mixed with yogurt and used as a conditioner for hair. That one was an odd point, but it helps doesn't it?.

Hi Aparna,
Nice Write up..Methi seeds have a lot of medicinal uses.My father is a diebatic, and i still see that he has the methi soaked overnight in water as the first thing in the morning..Thanks for sharing the information..
Aparna: Thanks Sudha. Thats the best medicine what your father takes. If taken over years, some say, that the diabetes just goes off.. as such there is no proof about that in medicine. Apart from controlling blood sugar, i am sure there must be lot of good changes in terms of metabolism in him.

Yep, I, too, have heard that methi seeds with yoghurt as conditioner bit. Anybody's first reaction to it can be 'YUK!', but I know that it works. Haven't tried it myself, but many of my friends have.
Aparna: I have never tried vaishali.. mom used apply only methi paste for my hair during sunday showers… school days!:)

Not know whether it has side effect, but had the same effect on me too. While searching about methid i landed on this page, and found someone similar who is experiencing the same problem. I guess though it is not said, but methi isn’t for everyone.

Yes it is a very good hair conditioner, I used methi powder mixed in curd and applied to hair before head bath and my hair always remains smooth, silky and shiny. It is very good for stomach aches. Every day i eat soaked methi early in the morning.

Yep!Fenugreek is very good for increasing your milk supply. I am a new mom (a working mom). So, sometimes my production is low when i pump. so, the lactation consultant advised me to take fenugreek - 3 capsules(610 mg each) 3 times a day. And it does help.

Is it true that fenugreek can enhance breast size?
04/10/08 9:05 AM at 04/10/08 9:05 AM
I have controlled my blood sugar within limits by regular use of fenugreek seeds in my diet, of course coupled with walking, yoga and other exercises.

Mala:- I do not think adding fenugreek or methi (as it is often called in India), is helping in the fermentation of dosa batter. It has cooling effect and has good medicinal value. Fenugreek leaves are also an excellant item for food. I use it almost daily and hence I thought I will reply your query.
04/10/08 9:34 AM at 04/10/08 9:34 AM
Sunil Nalvade:- I am a regular user of fenugreek seeds as well as leaves in my diet, almost daily you can say. So far, I have had no allergy or side effects or rashes in my body. I too had very high blood sugar. Regular and continuous use of the seeds and leaves have brought down to normal my blood sugar and I am normal now. I still continue with this diet which I like very much.
I am a Yoga enthusiast. Walking and Physical exercises daily also help me in shedding quite a bit of calories from my body, control my body weight and keep away the demon “Obesity”.. . I am running 83..
If you need more information, I will be happy to share with you from what little I know of fenugreek.
04/10/08 10:01 AM at 04/10/08 10:01 AM
To all users of Fenugreek seeds for Diabeties.:-
No doubt the regular use of fenugreek seeds will bring down the sugar level of a person . However a word of caution is necessary to be mentioned here for the benefit of all, as a sort of warning and alarm. One should be careful to see that his or her blood sugar does not go below normal, to a condition called Hypoglycemia which is dangerous..

HI! if anybody having rashes and itchy its best to rub baking soda on it. i developped rashes and itchyness i dont know if i can blame on methi. as i do take a sppoon full of haldi too.and nutmeg and cinamon. but baking sodas is helping to stop itchiness and rashes.though i still feel it it could be some fine mosquito which i dont see. or hot summer. but i never had these rashes before. i cant afford doctors so i work on self medications.
